Review “It’s Called A Breakup Because it’s Broken”

“It’s called a breakup because it’s broken” – The simplest epiphany you’ll ever have. This ingenious phrase may have been coined by Greg Behrendt for an episode of Sex and the City but that doesn’t mean it isn’t advice to live your life by and that goes for all advice given in this wonderful book.

“The First rule of the smart girl’s breakup is NO CALLING!” – “It’s called a breakup because its broken”

“It’s called a breakup because its broken” is a self-help book to assist its reader through the toughest of heartbreak. Written by Greg Behrendt (who you may know as the author of “He’s just not that into you”) it combines his token light-hearted humour with cold hard truths which anyone who has experienced a break up can relate to. Alongside Greg he is joined by his wife Amiira Ruotola-Behrendt who’s friendly female voice is present throughout the book.

Greg’s brilliantly timed sarcasm helps the heartbroken reader to laugh at their own situation as they find aspects of themselves in the ridiculously accurate anecdotes the book has to offer. From chapter 3’s title of “He’s not hiding at the bottom of that pint of ice cream” to the seven commandments of breakups this book acts more as an honest best friend than a self-help guide.

“it’s time to dry your tears, put down that pint of ice cream, log out of his e-mail, and open this book to Chapter One–and start turning your breakup into a breakover” – “Its called a breakup because its broken”

Despite this book being published in 2005 (when I was 6 years old and not even thinking about relationships, let alone breakups) 11 years later and the book is still as relatable as ever which just goes to show that the world may be advancing at a greater speed than ever before but breakups still hurt like a bitch! And I can honestly say no one summarises this better than Greg and Amiira.

However, my favourite part of the book has to be the section titled “But Greg, I’ve Got Questions” whereby Greg gives out heaps of advice to genuine questions you will ask yourself following a break up. Why do I love this so much? That’s easy, it’s because of the ‘Dear Greg’ agony aunt style of which it has been laid out. The hilarious letters of which Greg replies to bring up difficult topics in a melodramatic fashion.

“Alone also means available for someone outstanding.” – “Its called a break up because its broken”

Overall this book is a must read especially if you are any of the following: Male; Female; Straight; Gay; In a relationship; Single; Young or Old. Because this book has something for absolutely everyone! No matter if you are going through a breakup, if you want to prepare yourself for the possibility of a breakup or if you want to be a supportive friend, “It’s called a Break up because it’s Broken can help!”

Overall score – 8/10
